Amazon Awakenings by Dawn Lamanne
Recommended by: Rocky - 09.29.99
Classification: Uber/Classic
Sex/Violence Content: Alt - NC-17
Length: Novel, 234 pages - complete
*This story may also be found under Uber*

Not since the "Sunne in Scarlet" (Nene Adams) have I read a Brilliant Dramatic Romance like this one. Set in the twilight of the dark ages this wonderful story pulls you along with little effort at all. An Amazon chooses to leave the land of her birth to follow her lover, a crusader captured on Amazon lands, when he is freed to return to his home. Their Daughter stands at the portal of two worlds not willing to step fully into either one until a dark assassin comes calling. And the rest, at least in Dawn Lamanne's "Amazon Awakenings," is history.

Another Day In The Life
(aka How Gabrielle Got Her Pink Nightie) by Barbara Davies

Recommended by: Advocate - 03.07.00
Classification: Classic
Sex/Violence Content: Gen (with subtext) - PG
Length: Short Story - complete

Say hello to two old friends! In this short story, Barbara Davies reintroduces us to a season two Xena and Gabrielle. The title pretty much says it all. We have another giant, another love-sick fan (only this time it's Gabrielle who is the object of affection), a hot tub scene (was there ever a doubt?), and a Xena plan that comes together at the end. As in her other tales, Barbara Davies addresses her subject matter with an easy, understated style that's a pleasure to read. This piece manages to capture the magic of what may be the favorite X&G episode of all time.

At Charon's Dock by kate
Recommended by: Anima - 08.07.99
Classification: Classic
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Novella - complete

Well, this was a real treat. One of the best treatments of classic Xena and Gabrielle I've come across in some time. The story picks up at the funeral pyre scene in MATERNAL INSTINCTS and gives us an alternate story line, bypassing the infamous Gab drag and THE BITTER SUITE all together. Instead, Gabrielle makes that dramatic walk, in the opposite direction of Xena, and keeps on walking. Despondent over the deaths of their children and feeling responsible for Solon's death, the bard makes a deal that changes her and Xena's fate.....forever? Written in a realistic tone, even though part of it takes place in the surreal setting of Charon's Dock, it has a gritty feel that makes the characters flesh and bone. It's appropriately, and honestly, dark at times but never relinquishes the deep love between the two characters. I hate to give too much away but I need to say how much I adored the use of the dead hearing another's loving thoughts of them-it has always been a simply breathtaking notion, and here it is beautifully executed.

Bargain Hunting by Della Street
Recommended by: P.D. - 08.09.99
Genre: Classic
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Short Story - complete

Fans with a wry sense of humor will enjoy Bargain Hunting. This tale is timeless and contains the infamous Xena and Gabrielle character banter. Della's characterizations of the Warrior Princess and her chatty companion are right on and guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. Her writing style makes you feel as if you are actually witnessing the events unfold. This fast paced story reminds you of the trust, friendship, caring and loving nature built during the first two seasons of the show. You haven't lived till you've "shopped" with the warrior princess. Just don't make her mad and be sure the product is in good shape and attractively packaged. Most of all, keep a tight hold on your coin purse.

(The) Broken Thread by Ella Quince
Recommended by: Rocky - 09.04.99
Genre: Classic
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Short Story, 16 pages - complete

This is one of my favorite classic X&G alt short stories. A touch stone for when I think that if I read one more plot less, sex fan fic I will scream! It's a reminder of the true romance that is attractive about this genre in the first place. I tell myself if so many tender emotions can be tucked into one short story then perhaps there will be more. And yes there always is, but this is the one I keep coming back to--to remind myself of that.

The night before a battle Xena is alone by a campfire, Gabrielle is safe in a inn. This is where the same tired scenario stops. A warrior who has suffered a great loss comes to Xena's camp site on a mission of love and circumstance that will leave you pondering long after the story has been read.

(The) Cage of the Muses by baermer
Recommended by: Viv - 12.06.99
Genre: Classic
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Novel - complete

Call me a masochist, but I love to read long stories. I even love to read them over lunch, which is why I have four-hour lunches sometimes and no viable career to show for it. Anyway, baermer is one of my favorite bards in which I can indulge this questionable pleasure. Her latest, "The Cage of the Muses," is a great, epic story: Xena & Gab are summoned to Alexandria by Cleopatra. Once there, they get caught up in oodles of political intrigue, and the Gabster is offered a position as a scholar within the city's magnificent library, which gets her embroiled in even more intrigue. (I loved reading all the "behind the scenes" machinations of the library and those within its walls.)

This is a richly detailed story-the bard has done an admirable amount of research, and these realistic touches are woven into the work very well. In addition, baermer raises some thoughtful questions about knowledge and learning, and its pursuit and misuses. I also enjoy the relationship she has created between Xena & Gabrielle-they come across as true equals who maintain a profound respect for and a sensitivity to each other's needs, beliefs, and desires. In short, this is a great, rewarding read.

(The) Conquest of Canaan by Anna Game-Lopata
Recommended by: Rocky - 12.06.99
Genre: Classic
Sex/Violence Content: Alt - Rated R
Length: Novel, 199 pages - complete

Set during the Canaanite rebellion, this story has the unique perspective of siding with the natives rather than the invaders of the Old Testament. The Canaanite women worship the female aspect of god, 'Asherah' and wish only live in peace; the One God has told his invading followers eradicate these idolaters. Tamar, an Israelite, has turned against her father and goes abroad to Greece in search of the fabled 'Amazons' in hopes of finding allies in her cause. On the way she meets a Warrior and a Bard who travel together.

This isn't a story about Xena, rather it is the story of three women in her life who teach her about different degrees of love; Voula, Tamar and Gabrielle. Each of these women have their reasons for having the warrior in their lives and the only common denominator is of course 'love'. It was fascinating to watch each relationship unfold; the romance being fresh and completely different in all three women.

The marvelous thing about this whole book, is the way this author has flipped history over and shown us the alternative view point that sets any childhood religious lessons on their ear. Very well written, provocative and courageous.

Constancy by Xena’s Little Bitch (aka Julia Noel Goldman)
Recommended by: Advocate - 01.01.01
Genre: Classic
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Short Story - complete

In this sensual tale set near the end of the Norse Trilogy, Gabrielle is still asleep and waiting for her soulmate to release her from her spell. During this time, she can exercise some control over her mental driftings and thinks back to when she first started traveling with the Warrior Princess.

"Sometimes I like to think that if things had happened differently between Xena and myself in all sorts of ways, it would have created a different life for us. If we had made different choices, been slightly different people. So sometimes I play over scenes from our journeys and change them in ways I think would later improve our life, spare us at least a modicum of pain. It's not always who you kill and don’t kill; it’s sometimes who you kiss that changes your fate."

When Xena does come for Gabrielle, readers are treated to a loving, heartfelt reunion between soulmates, and the opening of a new chapter for the Bard and her Warrior. Realistic dialogue, well-written, descriptive text and the author’s fluid writing style make this short story a pleasure to read.

Creative License by Ella Quince
Recommended by: Vivian Darkbloom - 09.10.99
Genre: Classic
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Short Story - complete

All of Ella Quince's stories are so consistently well-written and lovingly crafted that it's hard to pick just one for a review. (So you can just scoot over to Ella's site and read all of them, okay?) Nonetheless, for all intensive purposes and just to make life easier, I'll select "Creative License," one of my recent faves. The plot: A warlord named Xena captures a bard named Gabrielle, who has been telling some pretty tall tales about the warrior. From there, we are presented with unique-I also think of them as radical-characterizations of Xena & Gab as very real, flesh-and-blood women, and not glamorized superheroes. In many other stories, even when X/G are presented with flaws, their shortcomings tend to be on a grand, almost melodramatic scale (like Xena's bothersome tendency toward pathology and murder, Gabrielle's tragic need to trust All the Wrong People, etc.). Not so in this story. Here, Ella renders them on a smaller scale, but with all the charm, chemistry, and dignity of the characters perfectly intact. Oh, yeah: It's damn funny, too.

Crusader: Twisted and Butchered by Silent Dee
Recommended by: Lariel - 03.24.01
Genre: Classic
Sex/Violence Content: Alt - Language Warning
Length: - complete

A lone horsewoman crests the brow of a hill, and rides recklessly into danger, intent on stopping the massacre she sees happening before her. And when she falls off her horse and knocks Gabrielle onto her ass, Xena gets really pissed: yes, it's Najara, high on Gin and ogling the bard... Baffled by the unusual but undeniable fighting skills of the strange woman, Xena and Gabrielle join the Light and go off to fight Marrat and his slavetraders. Unfortunately, the Light in this story is a little worse for wear. Several hipflasks the worse for wear actually, and after mumbling about "fags, curries, sing-songs and last night's kebab" Najara welcomes "me new best mates" into her fold. Especially Gabrielle, whom she folds with relish. Discovering the source of Najara's "powers" - her Gin hipflask - Xena hatches the perfect plan to stop her, using the perfect bait... Not for the delicate (its filled with filthy language), this story is a raucous parody of "Crusader" and if you like your comedy naughty, tasteless and ripe - this one's for you. Personally, I loved it

(The) Day the Ancient World Turned Day-Glo by Sasha Foo

Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Short Story - complete

How can you not love a story where Kathy Lee Gifford is decapitated? The story in question is Sasha Foo's "The Day the Ancient World Turned Day-Glo." Fabulous enough for the title alone, this story requires that you check all expectations of plot and seriousness at the door. It's an anarchic romp complete with Callisto, hallucinogenic mushrooms, beer bongs, sex, drag queens, and mass slaughter of Republicans, all couched within Homeric turns of phrase-and with most of the action occurring in the lovely city of Whatmeworry. (Anyone who has lived in New York during the Giuliani Reign of Terror will appreciate this story.) As Gabrielle herself proclaims in a bardic verse, "Xena and Gabrielle-living it up with pot and beer." I laughed my ass off. It's perfect.

This is the best 'What If' Xena story I've read in a while. What if Xena and Gabrielle grew up together? Deceptively and gently, Grit weaves a very complex and beautiful story of love and pain, while staying completely true to the characters of the classic Xena universe. I was totally spell bound by the story from beginning to end. After it was over I had sit and regroup for a couple of minutes... Wow!

Falling by Grit Jahning

Genre: Classic/Parallel Universe
Sex/Violence Content: Alt/NC-17
Length: Novel, 223 pages - complete

The author claims in the disclaimer that this is almost an uber, but I disagree. This is classic, although it takes place in an alternative universe. Grit Jahning (fast becoming one of my favourite writers) asks what would happen if Xena and Gabrielle had met earlier, and both our heroes had the chance at a more normal life. Adolescent Xena avoids the horrors of the raid by Cortese, and Gabrielle finds a family that loves her for who she is. Normally this would remove much of the depth to Xena's character, but the leads and peripheral roles are so lovingly rendered; Gabrielle's rescue from her brutal home life, Xena's discovery of someone to believe in her are beautifully rendered, that it instead becomes the reader's wish that they might have evaded the standard timeline. But this is also one of the sweetest romances it has been my delight to read. Touching, well written, although sometimes painful as well, this is a feast for the romantic, filled with phrases and scenes that touch the mind and heart with unerring precision.

(The) Fever by Nancy

Genre: Classic/Parallel Universe
Sex/Violence Content: Alt/NC-17
Length: Short Story, 25 pages - complete

It's a Hat Trick for Nancy! The third story in the Reversal series is just as engaging and imaginative as the first two stories. The Healer is trapped in the depths of a fever, leaving the Warrior at a loss as to how to care for her lover. The fever is actually a trap rather than the symptoms of a simple illness. Callisto has joined forces with Ares to set this trap and it is up to the Warrior to enter the realm of Morpheus to save the Healer. Before you say "Isn't that just like..." Let me say definitely 'No it isn't!' I love the slant that Nancy has cast on Xena and Gabrielle, with another new tale that will not disappoint.

For Ant of a Nail - by Lollius
Recommended by: Michel Salat - 08.03.99
Genre: Classic
Sex/Violence Content: Gen
Length: Short Story, 23 pages - complete

I *never* read gen fic. Ever. If it ain't explicitly alt, I ain't interested. That said, "For Ant of a Nail" is one of my favorite stories. It's got such a goofy premise (no sillier than some of the XWP comedy eps), and is so charmingly written, that I couldn't resist it.

The plot is simple enough. Xena and Gabrielle encounter an old acquaintance of Xena's, a king with designs on a prosperous nearby town. A town which Xena herself, in her warlord days, had tried unsuccessfully to sack, and where she's not likely to be welcomed as she tries to warn them of the impending danger. Aided by an unlikely bunch of cohorts, Xena and Gab formulate a very unusual plan - one that hinges upon an obscure linguistic detail - to save the city.

Along with Lollius's clear style and tongue-in-cheek attitude, what some readers will find especially appealing about this little story is how their mission depends upon Gab and Xena both using their time-honored bard and warrior skills in a nicely egalitarian fashion.

All told, a good bit of fun, with a plot device clever enough to catch and hold your interest (and one itty bitty subtext moment ). Anyone familiar with the brilliant filk "G&X Meet G&S" () will not be surprised to learn that Lollius is none other than Kevin Wald, the genius behind that Gilbert & Sullivan parody.

*as per requested by the site owner, this story is linked to the site's front page* Time for a little irreverent humour. Wyatt Traishe's "Gabrielle Learns Another Lesson" had me rolling on the floor. Xena and Gabrielle are visiting Cyrene and Lila in Amphipolis. While waiting tables the bard bowls over a priest resulting in an interesting curse with hilarious results. Warning this is trashy sexual humour at it's very best. Little people and hard core feminists are best to give it a miss. I promise you will never look at Lila or Argo the same way again!

This is a moving vignette that follows the last scene in A GOOD DAY. Told from Temecula's POV, it's a telling image of our warrior and bard and the notion of 'The Greater Good', as well as a very touching image of lost innocence. LN delivers a very thoughtful portrait here; it's particularly moving when read as a follow up to LN's vignette Midnight Letter.

Length: Short Story, 43 pages - complete

What I love about the better Fanfic is that our understanding of the characters allows the writers to create a plot with extra depth because of the inner conflicts and relationship that are art of the joy of Xena and Gabrielle. So in He Who Would be King, we find a detective story, a tale of conflicting interests and potential war, with golden nuggets of for us fanatics like this description of Xena by Gabrielle:

"Buried behind that wall was the guilt, the rage, and that darkness in her soul that scratched and clawed for freedom, but also behind that wall was her vulnerability, and as her vulnerability peered back at me through that crack, I saw that it had my face."

(The) High Pass by Jim
Recommended by: angharad governal - 04.28.00
Genre: Classic
Sex/Violence Content: Gen (with subtext)
Length: Short Story - complete

Ancient Greek playwrights perfected the concept of tragedy and since that time, tragedies have been the staple of storytelling. Although Greek tragedies traditionally consisted of a very specific set of criteria, the nature and scope of what constitutes tragedy has attained a gut-wrenching familiarity that both echoes the ancient creation, as well as expanding into something of a more contemporary nature. The High Pass is a wonderful and vibrant example of the contemporary concept of tragedy which also echoes the ancient tradition. Our warrior and bard, having spent several months fighting a nocturnal terror in the Carpathian mountains, now find themselves journeying back across famine stricken lands towards Greece. The trek lasts for nearly three months and it is in the journeying that both our heroes are tested physically and psychologically. Readers, along with Xena and Gabrielle, are taken along a road that renews and reaffirms hope and faith. A great read.

What do you get when you take our beloved heroic duo, Ingmar Bergman's classic flick, "The Seventh Seal" (a personal fav), and "fun with subtitles" Monty Python (another fav) esque humor? You get this unusual, but effective, and incredibly funny parody of XWP eps, as well as Bergman's famous black and white classic. If you've ever wondered why Death (or Deth) is always portrayed sporting a Swedish accent, or had a sneaking suspicion about the accuracy (or inaccuracy) of subtitles, this little tale, written in the form of a film script, will confirm and answer those nagging questions.

In The Kingdom Of Horses by Mary Morgan

Genre: Classic/Parody
Sex/Violence Content: Gen
Length: Short Story, 40 pages - complete

When one of your favorite authors stops writing there is always a sense of loss. When they return after an absence of over a year with a new epic, it’s time to celebrate. The author of such brilliant works as Mortal Trade, The Judgment of the Gods, and the perfect short story After the Volcano, Mary’s forte has always been imaginative creations that highlight the bond and relationship between the Bard and Warrior. This story does exactly that. Though there is no explicit sex, and the story might be considered Gen, their commitment to each other could not be stronger.

Set in other mythical kingdom once taken by the Destroyer of Nations, Xena is asked to play a dark role in the upcoming transfer of power, the details of which he is sworn not to reveal to her inquisitive and worried Bard. Gabrielle soon realizes that nothing is as it seems, and that Xena’s life and soul are in the balance. The story is possibly handicapped by a somewhat slow opening, and by a narrative style different from her usual work. This is not a fanfic bonbon to be scanned. It is one to be read slowly so that the rhythm of the prose carries you with it.

The story is rich in detail. She combines the actual character of Hesiod (circa 720 B.C.) with a mystery, a supernatural backdrop and an hidden curse, and moves them with some spectacular sequences and brilliant dialogue. The exploration of the minds and hearts of Gabrielle and Xena, their fears and obligations to the greater good and each other, is discerning and moving.

(The) Love of Lao Ma by Dana Cory
Recommended by: Anima - 10.05.99
Genre: Classic
Sex/Violence Content: Alt
Length: Short Story - complete

(No subliminal messages were harmed in the production of this recommendation)

Ever since the airing of The Debt episodes (hot sex), I've heard folks misinterpret the idea of 'desire' as it was expressed by Lao Ma. The western mind seems to have a hard time grasping (hot sex) the concept of 'letting go of desire' without placing it in a sexual context. In other words, there's a strong tendency (hot sex) for many to believe that Lao Ma was an advocate for the elimination of 'sexual desire'. But as we know Xena (hot sex), through both canon and fanfic, this seems a most laughable proposal!

And this is why I absolutely *adore* this story. Dana (hot sex) has utilized the principles of Taoism in order to explore the erotic. How ironic, everything considered. and how perfect! Lao Ma teaches Xena the tenets of her beliefs, each step moving Xena towards a deeper (hot sex) connection with Lao Ma, her world, and most importantly, herself. Not only is it an extremely (hot sex) interesting interpretation of Taoism, it is also a very erotic read. I found the surprise twist towards the end particularly satisfying. It's great to see bards dare to write the unexpected in this genre that screams for perfect, very often, predictable endings. Not simply for rebellion's sake (hot sex) but because, sometimes, it just rings more true.

One of the things that the best fanfiction have in common is that they often seem like the road not taken. I can't help but feel a regret while reading them, that this was not the direction the show decided upon. So it is with this full length novel.

The first chapters of this story were begun between seasons four and five , and it starts with the events following the Ides of March, and the deaths by crucifixion of Xena and Gabrielle. Our heroes' bodies have been removed from their crosses and it is Amarice who realizes that the Devi Eli might be able to bring them back. The scenes that follow will bring a tear and warmth to all the romantics who felt the loss of the relationship between the two, as their time in Elysia proves to be their chance to discover their true feelings, and their destinies together. Filled with gentle passion, this story is not perfect.

A few scenes feel as though they were rushed on occasion, and there are small sequences of dialogue that could be retouched. But overall, it challenges Missy as an alternative to the show, integrating certain changes while trying its best to keep a parallel course; but always emphasizing that the Bard and Warrior's love for one another is a physical thing, and the guiding force in their lives. That this is a first time effort is the most astounding thing, and it is with great anticipation that I see the author has already begun her sequel. To sum up, if you enjoy Merwolf, discover Linda Crist.

The first alternative universe story that I really liked, this one is based around that wonderful second season episode “Remember Nothing”, only this time, Xena didn’t shed blood. However, she has managed to rescue Gabrielle and this two part story deals with her efforts to rehabilitate the former slave, and to find again the best friend whom she left behind when she chose the path that the Fates had allowed her.

Both characters are drawn beautifully; we have our Xena, continually struggling against her violent nature, forced to try for a life of peace and desperate to reaffirm the relationship that she had with ‘her’ Gabrielle, yet astonished and almost reluctant to find the feelings she is having for this particular Gabrielle are very different to what she was used to. And we have Gabrielle. Just like the girl in the episode, she is fearful, subdued and subjugated; afraid to stand up for herself, mistrusting Xena’s motives, cynical and hopeless. Yet somehow, Xena manages to break through the girl’s shell, and the two begin to build a deep and trusting relationship.

It is interesting to see the switch in roles in this story; it is Gabrielle who becomes the warrior as a way of dealing with the psychological damage done to her. The girl flies into uncontrollable rages or crying fits, and can only purge them through physical exertion and violence. Xena, on the other hand, must keep to her path of peace if she is to stay with this Gabrielle, and it is the former warrior who helps Gabrielle to at last find happiness within herself.

Beautifully written, joyful and tragic by turns, this is one of the most moving pieces of fanfic I have ever read, and it still makes me cry now.

Reading this story actually made my breathing slow down, if you can believe it. The first offering by supremely talented newcomer, JLynn, One Last Breath is a vignette told from Xena's perspective as she and the bard are crucified at the end of the episode The Ides Of March. Often excruciating to read, this tale is a beautifully written and powerful look at what could very realistically have been the last thoughts of the warrior on that dreadful day as she struggles to remain alive purely for the sake of her partner. Don't miss it, it's like a punch in the gut. (Of the literary kind)

Quality Dying Time by Temora

Another great tale from Temora has Xena and Gabrielle facing the very realistic prospect of a slow death as they are trapped under a rockslide on a deserted mountain. Only one person stands between them and a painful, lingering death - a very disturbed young girl, Tai. A fascinating story in its premise, Temora successfully injects pathos, humour and a very real sense of helplessness, fear and anger in her characters as the story unfolds.

As if the prospect of dying slowly on a mountainside whilst a young child plays mental and emotional games for fun with Xena and Gabrielle wasn’t chilling enough, Temora keeps the pace, the suspense and the emotions right at the forefront with some strong characterisations right through. Her Xena and Gabrielle are true to type, Xena being especially interesting as we see her in an atypical situation; helpless and dependant upon another for help, but it is Tai who is the real star of this story. You’ll want to hug, slap, kiss and kill this child by turns. And you’ll be asking yourself right up till the end - will Tai let them die?

As all convoluted games, this one has a simple beginning. Gabrielle bets Xena she can convince a tavern's occupants that Xena is her slave. And the game is on. Through a multi-layered, delicately building game of seduction, the Amazon Queen shows the quite untameable Warrior Princess that seduction is an art form and that submission has great rewards. Personally, I was overflowing enough to ruin a week's worth of clean underwear after finishing this story, but that's not what is so wonderful about this classic. It's the love and understanding that shines through every word, the truth that one can know someone else better than herself.

Regret by Extra

In a land where Gods are cruel and winter is harsh there are two travellers. One is happy, the other believes she would be content alone. Extra has shared with us a tale of regret, longing and lessons learned with Xena and Gabrielle as the stars. It is six months after Gabrielle followed the quiet warrior from Potadeia, and in the grip of a bitter winter their fledgling friendship is unravelling. In the haven of a warm cave Xena comes to learn that being alone is wrapped in loneliness, and she reaches out in the one way that she knows will bring the bard happiness.

With Extra*s words we can feel the bitter bite of the cold, the relief in the flames of the fire, and Xena*s regret as she finally comes to realize just how alone she has kept herself. The early differences between Xena and Gabrielle are exquisitely drawn in "Regret". Extra seems to have a clear understanding of the former warlord*s heart and vividly paints the picture of Xena*s evolution from loner to that of a friend. I would recommend this story to anyone looking to be moved by a short, but meaningful piece of fan fiction. There is no warning needed for adult situations. There are none. This story should be a classic among readers, it is Xena and Gabrielle as they were before they became close. Read this and witness the birth of friendship.

Of all the 'What if' pieces I've read, this is by far the most unique and entertaining. Like the title suggests, expect everything to be turned 180 degrees. A crippled healer finds a dying warrior on a battlefield. These two souls are drawn together in a way which is familiar and yet completely different As you can tell, I don't want to give away the plot simply because the unusual circumstance of this story is the major part of its charm. Fresh and imaginative, this is an entirely new slant on Xena fan fiction.

Ladies and gentlemen ...we have a series. This is the second in what the author has now dubbed "The Reversal Series," and this makes me a very happy camper. Nancy continues to tell the tale of the warrior and the healer in a fresh and very believable manner. No compromise is taken with the characters of Xena and Gabrielle, they remain true to the women we love, despite the fact that they walk through this new world of Nancy's crafting. The Healer and the Warrior aid a village that has been hit by a Warlord. They each make mistakes that so many do early in a relationship. Healer learns that the Warrior must have a place in her craft and the Warrior learns that she can't protect the Healer all of the time. This common theme is told in whole new way and yet the lesson of trust remains the same.

While there are a lot of Callisto stories out there, few of them make you laugh. This one will, in spades. Set vaguely in the second season, this story has Callisto finding Gabrielle in the marketplace. Rather than taking vengeance, Callisto decides to be far crueler, and helps Gabrielle shop. The resulting chaos, as well as a showdown between Xena and Callisto (over Gabrielle, of course), is a delight to read. This is one of those stories that will have you dreaming it was an episode!

Charmer gives us an ending to the IDES OF MARCH that has some very intriguing consequences. I hesitate to give away too much because it's a real joy to try and figure out what the hell's going on in that first scene! Why the heck are Gabrielle and Callisto so chummy? And why does Callisto seem ....well.... likeable? All I can reveal is that Gabrielle finds herself unable to sleep due to some vivid, intense dreaming and she's desperate for some answers. Within moments, you'll find yourself plunged into a world that is both heart breaking and thought provoking. This little treasure is unlike anything else I've read of Charmer's. Unlike the humor and sexiness of her past stories (of which I'm a big fan), this is a thoughtful, poignant piece. It hits all the right notes and then some. Truly, it's been some time since I've enjoyed a classic XWP short story as much as I did this one.

(The) Stars Fell Down by Vivian Darkbloom

Length: Short Story - complete

Despite a short introduction by Mel and Janice, "The Stars Fell Down" is really a classic X&G first time story -- albeit with a few twists (remember, this is Vivian Darkbloom we're talking about). Told from Gabrielle's point of view, the story is beautifully written and presented as a scroll Mel has translated for Janice's birthday. "Stars" begins with the warrior and bard taking a few days off from their travels to keep Autolycus company on his "vacation" -- or to be more exact, to keep an eye on the King of Thieves who has profitable plans for a village festival. Before their stay is over, Gabrielle instigates a bar fight, Autolycus gives the "sensitive chat," and Xena ... well, Xena is just Xena. Further information will only spoil the fun.

Anyone familiar with Darkbloom's stories knows the author can be excruciatingly funny (The Trailer Park Series is one example) and that she has also written some of the most beautiful prose out there (run, don't walk, to read her vignette "Venezia"). What makes "Stars" special is the combination of those talents: even as you laugh at Gabrielle's predicament, you can't help but be moved by the story of her love.

There are many bards who write with their hearts on the page. There are even a few who write intelligently and with great skill. One the very few that does both well at the same time is Bridget Doyle. Unlike many whose pieces produce tears by being manipulative through technique, her stories always seem far too personal to be simply about the placement of the words. At the same time there is usually depth and character to each story.

Stolen Moments is a wonderful example of this. A tear jerker by anyone’s standards, it doesn’t accomplish this by pushing buttons. In fact it seems like a very personal piece, and unlike most fanfic, I felt as if I were intruding on the writer by reading it.

The story is set in Potadaia after the 25 year deep freeze, after ‘Who’s Ghurkan?’. Gabrielle is helping Lila and Sarah pack up the old homestead and wondering how her mother dealt with her disappearance, after the long absence. In a resolution we all might wish to have with lost family members, Xena stumbles across a series of long lost and much loved letters, and Gabrielle discovers what a mother’s love is again.

The Third Wheel by Jenbob is, simply put, a good old fashioned story. The story begins shortly after the events in the XWP ep, "A Day in the Life". Our two heroines have been spending several uneventful weeks on the road, and decide that they should take a rest at the village of Trezine. As they reach their destination, trouble arises - the village is being raided by "baddies". They rush to help, and discover more than either of them expected. I love the idea of concept stories - stories that make you want to smack your forehead with the palm of your hand and say, "Damn! That's a great idea!" What makes it even better is when the said concept is executed in a simple and beautifully elegant manner that belies the complexity of the creation. Triptych Home (and for that matter, its predecessor, Triptych Sex) is such a creation. As the title suggests, Anima takes the concept of "home" and explores it in three very different stories; it is this common thread that both binds and differentiates each separate tale. It's difficult to summarize (much less coalesce) what happens within the framework of this tripartite short story into a single sentence that will cover the numerous threads each part explores. However, each "section" - a World War II Uber, a classic X&G story, and a modern day Uber - is a complete entity in and of itself, but taken together, it becomes magnified into something quite unique and simply, well, "cool".

I don't think that it is any secret that I am a huge fan of Mary Morgan's, and that I consider her one of the touchstones to the true character of the classic Gabrielle. So it should be no surprise to find that when she decided to try the Post FIN genre, that it would be both original and enlightening. This is a Gabrielle of many years past the events of Japa; a colder and focussed warrior.

"She was coal being burnt, and the ash flame left after. She was water warped into ice and locked in her coldness. She was darkness with no hope of light, for she was the heart of the rock. She knew all this, and knew why she knew it."

How Gabrielle finds her soul and confronts a very real destroyer of self is not the happy creation of most bards within this universe, but it is a resolution that will uplift the heart. Along the way are insights into the relationship and the familiar characters that will resonate within the soul of any fan. Hard to read sometimes and yet emotionally and intellectually satisfying, this is a wonderful piece of writing that I must recommend.

As a reader, I am usually my own worst enemy: Sometimes I spend too much time racing ahead of the plot, trying to figure out what will happen, instead of just enjoying the ride. But, in the case of Danae's "Untamed," I could not have guessed what was around the corner, even if I had tried. With gentle, deceptive humor, the story starts out marking a happy occasion: Gabrielle gives birth, with Xena at her side. Later, we flash forward: Gabrielle's daughter, Piscea, is now the Amazon Queen, and her proud parents are middle-aged, happy, and still roaming the countryside. (One hopes they have an RV at this point.) But the young Queen is tormented by feelings that will not go away; at the prompting of her best friend, she reveals a troubling secret that has plagued her for years. Taut and effective, "Untamed" builds upon a sense of unspoken dread-and this is a testament to the quality of the writing-and reaches a devastating truth in its last line with a haunting, extraordinary power. It remains one of my favorite short stories in fanfic.

Length: Short Story - complete

In the wonderful tradition of "A Day in the Life" comes Ogami's "Verse & Vignette," an appealing mixture of ... well, verse and vignette (plus some well-chosen images). Alternately funny and whimsical, and then romantic and thoughtful, Ogami expertly captures the spirit of that much-loved episode, but adds his own special touch -- a rather earthy and realistic look at the warrior and bard's relationship, complete with discussions about everything from varicose veins to the merits of leg-shaving.

Casting Xena and Gabrielle in a less-mythic role than most doesn't detract from the romance of their relationship, it only enhances it. The earthy treatment, complete with the sort of everyday fears and securities that even legendary warriors and bards can't avoid, only makes the tender moments in the story that much sweeter. A perfect example is the wonderful exchange between warrior and bard, as Gabrielle shares a particularly personal scroll with Xena. Though not at all explicit, it ranks as one of my all-time favorite romantic scenes. And it's just one of many equally well-written vignettes in this charming story.

We are afforded a glimpse of Caesar's vision, his startling perception, and his chilling lack of empathy. Imagine is an eloquent and literary writer, and this paves the way for the second half of the tale, Xena's story.
