He Who Would Be King by True Blue
Gen/Classic, 43 pages - Complete
Recommended by Kamouraskan ~ November 10, 2001

What I love about the better Fanfic is that our understanding of the characters allows the writers to create a plot with extra depth because of the inner conflicts and relationship that are art of the joy of Xena and Gabrielle. So in He Who Would be King, we find a detective story, a tale of conflicting interests and potential war, with golden nuggets of for us fanatics like this description of Xena by Gabrielle:

"Buried behind that wall was the guilt, the rage, and that darkness in her soul that scratched and clawed for freedom, but also behind that wall was her vulnerability, and as her vulnerability peered back at me through that crack, I saw that it had my face."

(The) High Pass by Jim

Gen w/ subtext; Classic X&G; finished; short story
Recommended by angharad governal 28 Apr 2000

Ancient Greek playwrights perfected the concept of tragedy and since that time, tragedies have been the staple of storytelling. Although Greek tragedies traditionally consisted of a very specific set of criteria, the nature and scope of what constitutes tragedy has attained a gut-wrenching familiarity that both echoes the ancient creation, as well as expanding into something of a more contemporary nature. The High Pass is a wonderful and vibrant example of the contemporary concept of tragedy which also echoes the ancient tradition. Our warrior and bard, having spent several months fighting a nocturnal terror in the Carpathian mountains, now find themselves journeying back across famine stricken lands towards Greece. The trek lasts for nearly three months and it is in the journeying that both our heroes are tested physically and psychologically. Readers, along with Xena and Gabrielle, are taken along a road that renews and reaffirms hope and faith. A great read.

Heroes by Joanna

General, Uber,  parody, finished PG -13
Recommended by Taleweaver (taleweaver@hotmail.com) March 20 2001

Although this is an older story, written in January of 1999, it is in no way lessened. "Heroes" is a parody of the popular show "Cops" and without a doubt, it's a gas!

Xena and Gabrielle pursue a warlord in true "Cops" fashion, and it's a chase for your funnybone, believe me. There are so many gems in this story that I can't share too many without giving away the story, but here is just a glimpse of Joanna's sense of humor...

Xena (shouting): "We're in pursuit! Do your thing Gabrielle!"
Gabrielle starts imitating a siren as they chase the warlord.

With Joanna's bardic record, she could probably take a grocery list and have it emerge as a side splitter. With a foot chase, a helpful warlord who appears to be a henbane dealer and a dumpling stop for our heroes, I feel I should warn you not to drink anything while you read this. So put down the danish and coffee and enjoy Joanna's "Heroes". This story can be found at

The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Xenaverse by Mocking Bard (AKA Ariel)
(ALT) Classic XWP, (satire) short story - Finished, 10 pages
Recommended by Rocky ~ March 4, 2002

I laughed, I tittered, I even chucked a time or two and then before I knew it ...I was blowing coffee out my nose. Hilariously funny, especially if you've written anything remotely Xena_ish in your life time. Never before has virginity been used as a plot gag with such panache.

Leave your proud sensibilities at the door when you read this wild and woolly, warped version of all things Xena. There are no sacred cows in this piece, every cliché is laid bare to it's gooey mush_filled center.

[As soon as they stopped walking, the sun set and they found themselves sitting around a campfire on their abundance of furs and blankets. Xena stared at Gabrielle with her baby_blue orbs, their azure brilliance and sapphire quality like cerulean cobalt. Xena took Gabrielle into her arms, kissing her tenderly and stroking her long_red short_blonde hair. The bard responded to the kisses.

"Oh Xena, I love you so much, but I don’t know what to do."

"Gabrielle, I am very experienced having about seventy_two lovers before you, but I know you won’t be jealous of that and I will teach you everything."]

...and that's just the beginning.

Warning: Do Not read while drinking hot beverages, especially if you have sensitive sinuses.

Home Fires by Roo

Alt/Mel & Janice/Unfinished
Reviewed by Viv (lat18@columbia.edu)  12/6/99

It's always a pleasant surprise to stumble upon a Mel/Janice story that is well-written, witty, and fun. These qualities helped me get over my initial skepticism at shipping Our Favorite Proto-Uber Grrls Down Under for this piece. (Don't know why, maybe it was being spanked with a copy of  "The Thorn Birds" as a child. So,  I was nervously anticipating clunky surreal dialogue like,  "A dingo ate my fedora!" But guess what? The locale is great and works wonderfully.) The plot is thus: Janice is hired to head an excavation in the Aboriginal outback.  Her arrival there reunites her with Mel, who is in serious jeopardy of losing her toaster oven because she is kinda shacked up with this Strine dude and playing surrogate mom to his teenage daughter.  The characterizations are solid, the dialogue lively and believable, and the story itself is well-paced. I eagerly await an update.

Hunting Clarion - Book one of the Vampire Hunter Series by  Jp

Alt-Uber NC-17 Novel 353 pages - Complete
Recommended by Rocky (shaunday@connect.ab.ca) 02/19/00

Move over Annie there's a new blood in town!  I have to admit that this one had me hooked from the get-go.  Don't let the size of it scare you off I flew through this one, and am eagerly seeking more.  Please Jp, I sure hope the next book is well on it's way 'cause I can hardly wait!

Yoshima Miakoda is a Hunter, protector of the innocent, slayer of vampires.  The product of nearly a millennium of living after being adopted by Japanese parents.  All that she has come to believe in is
rudely turned upside down in the form of a Gallery worker named Clarion Larieux.  Their meeting is unusual to say the least, as Yoshi saves Clarion from the grasp of a gang of vampires. Yoshi has a hidden past...  but so does Clarion.

The subtle dance these two weave around each other is fun, fast paced, and enthralling.  Even non-goth fans will enjoy this one.
